Port Layer 2 Multicast

Profinet

High-speed real-time Ethernet for factory lines.

Protocol Functionality

PROFINET is Siemens' flagship Ethernet-based factory automation standard. To achieve sub-millisecond precision, real-time control frames bypass the IP routing layer entirely, communicating directly at OSI Layer 2 using raw Ethernet broadcast/multicast systems.

Active Scan Crash Hazards

Standard network scanners scan IP ranges and SNMP ports aggressively. This IP-layer broadcast flood overwhelms the PLC's networking co-processor, delaying raw Layer 2 real-time IO frames. If a real-time PROFINET frame is delayed by even 5-10ms, the PROFIsafe protocol triggers a safety halt, shutting down active assembly lines.

Deterministic Safe Discovery

Solapse skips IP sweeps on real-time subnets. Instead, we passive-sniff or issue a single PROFINET DCP (Discovery and Basic Configuration) multicast frame. Devices reply with their assigned name, IP address, manufacturer ID, and model details without triggering CPU bottlenecks.

Security Best Practices

  • Deploy MAC-level security on managed switches in PROFINET zones.
  • Isolate real-time PROFINET VLANs from enterprise network links.
  • Establish alerts for PROFINET DCP configuration renaming requests.
